Scripture: Titus 1:6-9( Recovery Version)
If anyone is unreprovable, the husband of one wife, having believing children not accused of dissoluteness or unruly. For the overseer must be unreprovable as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered not an excessive drinker, not a striker, not greedy for base gain; But hospitable, a lover of good, of a sober mind, righteous, holy, self-controlled; Holding to the faithful word, which is according to the teaching of the apostles, that he may be able both to exhort by the healthy teaching and to convict those who oppose.
In our previous post, we saw Paul instructing his son Titus to appoint elders to put into order the instructions of God for the smooth running of the churches in Crete. Faithfulness must be one of the objective standards of anyone who is appointed as an elder. Such a person must bring transparency into the kingdom business and infuse discipline into the church.
An elder must be able to restrain their flesh which can keep you pure and holy. If in any case you are married, you have to be very faithful to your wife and not sleep around. An elder must have self-control, live a moderate life, be hospitable, loving, caring for people, and not quarrelsome. Also, a church elder must be pure in matters of money since they take decisions in that direction, and last of all his children must be well trained and following God’s order.
What establishes a church is the teaching of God’s word. An elder must not just be an example to his local church but be sound in doctrine and not promote division in the church, but according to the apostle’s teaching maintaining order to the revelation of God’s word. May the Spirit of God guide you in every role you find yourself in the local church. Be blessed!!!
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for choosing me and administering your command in bringing orderliness to the church into my care. Help me to accomplish this well in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
